Tim James
Recently, Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim James took time to visit the Village at Cooks Springs while in St. Clair County on a recent campaign swing through east central Alabama. James met with the editorial board of the St. Clair News Aegis and spoke to a gathering of the St. Clair County Republican Party. James told the St. Clair County Republicans that he wanted to see growth in all 67 Alabama counties and he believed that by providing the same economic incentives to Alabama small businesses thatthe large, multi-national companies have received over the past few years would spur that growth. According to James, “you have got to take care of your own”.
James also discussed education. He indicated that his administration would create an Alabama Reading Corps. The ranks of the corps would be filled with college students who would teach young children to read, while simultaneously earning college credit. James believes the emphasis in early childhood education should be on reading.
Lastly, James spoke to the packed crowd about taxes and spending. He indicated that government must live within its means. He stressed getting back to sound, fundamental economic policies at both the national and state level. James vowed to veto any new taxes.
St. Clair County Republican Party Chairman Joseph D. “Joey” Stevens stated after the event “Tim’s message was well received here tonight. I think people want to hear that its time to get back to basics and that government should exercise discipline in its spending.” Stevens further stated “Alabama families have been forced in some form or fashion to tighten their belts amid this economic downturn, we expect government to do the same.”
